911±¬ÁÏÍøYPG Event Recap – Glazing Bootcamp Tour

On October 6th, the 911±¬ÁÏÍøYoung Professionals Group Southern California and District Council 36 Local Union 636 hosted a successful glazing bootcamp for our Young Professionals Group. YP’s had the opportunity to learn about glass and glazing by applying hands on experience at our Apprenticeship facility in Commerce. Starting with an introductory presentation, Instructors Mike Galstaun and Gary Wahlenmaier explained what it’s like to be a glazier from required skills and training certifications to working conditions and duties. Following with a guide on the difference between installing curtain walls and storefronts.

Our young professionals learned how to install curtail walls and storefronts on small 12×12 prototypes. With the help of the glazing apprentices and the instruction by Mike and Gary, attendees individually worked on disassembling storefronts and curtain walls then re-assembling them by drilling holes, installing precut glass and frames while utilizing the pressure bar to put all parts together and adding seal façade to protect from water.

After successfully assembling the storefronts and curtain walls, attendees were trained on how to safely use the water testing feature, swing stage and spydercrane. The bootcamp concluded with a lengthy and informative Q&A session. And as always, thank you to our Union partners at District Council 36 Local Union 636 and our Apprenticeship Training Center team and apprentices, for their constant commitment, support and efforts to make this all possible.
